Machabeng College Hosts Mandela Coding World Cup Competition in Maseru

Machabeng College in Maseru hosted the Mandela Coding World Cup competition on Tuesday, bringing together learners, educators, and community members to showcase coding and robotics skills. The event formed part of the school’s efforts to expand access to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education while giving back to the community.
Mr. Tabempe Lesenyeho, a teacher at Machabeng College and STEM organiser, explained that local schools were invited to witness practical demonstrations of coding and robotics. He noted that while robotics and coding are often linked, they are distinct areas. Coding refers to writing instructions in computer languages, while robots carry out tasks based on these codes.
Mr. Lesenyeho highlighted the challenges of teaching technology in rural areas, many of which lack electricity and digital infrastructure. To address this, Machabeng College encourages the use of cell phones as learning tools. He explained that mobile devices can perform many of the same functions as computers, enabling students to practice coding through interactive applications and games. This approach allows learners to grasp coding concepts outside traditional classroom settings.
The initiative also focuses on problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking. By using tangible tools and alternative methods, learners in underserved areas gain access to skills that prepare them for the digital future.
Looking ahead, Mr. Lesenyeho announced that Machabeng College plans to host a larger coding and robotics World Cup event next year. The competition will involve lower-level schools and aims to equip young students with the technical knowledge and problem-solving skills needed to thrive in a technology-driven world.
The Mandela Coding World Cup at Machabeng College reaffirmed the importance of inclusive STEM education and highlighted the role of schools in bridging the digital divide in Lesotho.
