Lesotho Launches Digitization of National Laws for Free Public Access

On September 26, 2025, the Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Limpho Tau, on behalf of the Minister of Law and Justice, Hon. Richard Ramoeletsi, officiated the launch of the digitization of the Laws of Lesotho.
The launch follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Office of Parliamentary Counsel (OPC), the African Legal Information Institute (AfricanLII), and the non-profit organisation Laws.Africa. The MOU outlines a project to digitize and consolidate the Laws of Lesotho, ensuring that all legal information is freely accessible online.
This initiative aligns with Lesotho’s commitment as a member of the Montreal Declaration on Free Access to Law, which guarantees that public legal information produced by public bodies is readily available to all. By providing open access to laws, Lesotho seeks to promote justice, strengthen the rule of law, and enhance transparency in governance.
The digitization project is expected to support legal practitioners, researchers, students, and the general public, making legal resources easier to search, reference, and use. Officials noted that the initiative represents a significant step in modernizing the legal system and improving public access to legal information nationwide.
