New Agricultural Storage Facility in Lesotho Yet to Become Operational

The Agricultural Storage and Logistic Infrastructure in Ha Foso, handed over by the government of the People’s Republic of China in December last year, has not yet become operational. Chief Information Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, Mr. Lereko Masupha, confirmed in an interview that logistical challenges, including the recruitment of staff, are delaying the facility’s opening.
Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, Mr. Thabo Mofosi, highlighted during the handover ceremony that the Ministry plans to hire technically skilled personnel as well as youth. The selected candidates will undergo training to manage the facility effectively and ensure safe storage of food.
The Area Chief of Ha Foso, Mr. Masupha Majara, expressed hope that local youth will be employed at the facility. He noted that this would help address unemployment, reduce crime, and combat drug abuse, which are major challenges in the village.
Valued at M150 million, the Agricultural Storage and Logistic Infrastructure is designed to store food grains purchased from local farmers and distribute them to vulnerable populations. Once operational, it is expected to enhance food security while creating job opportunities and supporting community development.
