Levis’ Nek Community Sensitized Ahead of 2026 Population and Housing Census

As preparations intensify for the 2026 Population and Housing Census scheduled for April, the Levis’ Nek community has been sensitized on the importance of the exercise. The gathering was conducted by the District Disaster Management Team through coordination with the Disaster Management Authority.
Addressing the meeting, Acting District Disaster Manager Mr. Mare Keketsi said public sensitization is critical for the success of the census. He explained that awareness helps communities understand census concepts and comply fully during data collection. He added that the Department of Bureau of Statistics plays a key role within the DDMT in ensuring accurate information reaches the public.
Speaking to the Levis’ Nek community, Bureau of Statistics Leribe representative Mr. Ramabele Lekoatsa encouraged residents to ask questions freely during the census. He said open engagement leads to better outcomes and more accurate data. He assured the community that census assistants are Basotho, which removes language barriers between households and enumerators.
Mr. Lekoatsa emphasized that elders should make themselves available to respond to questions instead of relying on their children. He said this approach ensures clear and accurate information for each household. He reminded the community that the census is conducted every ten years in April and includes all citizens, including those living outside the country for work purposes.
Responding to concerns about the population remaining around two million, Mr. Lekoatsa said factors such as hunger and unemployment lead families to have fewer children. He also cited the rise in new illnesses and high mortality rates as contributing factors to population decline. He noted that during the census, households are counted together with their animals and other household assets.
Community members acknowledged that they remember previous census questions and committed to full cooperation in 2026. It was also noted that Heads of Departments were sensitized on the upcoming census in November last year. A Publicity Committee will be established with support from the District Administrator’s office to strengthen outreach efforts.
Heads of Departments pledged to work closely with the Bureau of Statistics to ensure a successful census. This collaboration includes continued cooperation with the DDMT through the Disaster Management Authority.
Mr. Lekoatsa also highlighted the use of E-Census technology for data collection. He explained that devices will only function within assigned areas to protect data integrity. The theme for the 2026 Population and Housing Census is Be counted, be heard. The last census in Lesotho was conducted in 2016.
