Prime Minister Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane Arrives in Gaborone for Regional World Children’s Day Commemoration

Prime Minister Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane has arrived in Gaborone, Botswana for the Regional World Children’s Day Commemoration set for 15 November 2025. His visit supports a regional effort that places children at the center of policy conversations in Southern Africa.

Lesotho is one of eight countries invited to the event. The others are South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe. These countries will join Botswana in marking a day that strengthens cooperation on children’s rights across the region.

The 2025 theme is My day, My Rights, From Promises to Action. The theme highlights a direct call for governments to turn commitments into measurable progress. It also creates space for children to speak, influence decisions and shape the future of child rights in their countries. The program includes discussions where children present their concerns and offer ideas. This ensures that leaders hear their voices without barriers.

The Prime Minister’s delegation includes children from the leadership program managed by Harvest FM. Their presence gives young people from Lesotho a real chance to engage with regional peers and share experiences that reflect their daily lives. It also helps build confidence and leadership skills for future roles in their communities.

World Children’s Day is a global day of action led by UNICEF. It marks the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child on 20 November. The day promotes unity, raises awareness about issues that affect children and supports efforts to improve their welfare. The regional commemoration in Gaborone adds practical steps by bringing governments and children into the same room. This improves accountability and strengthens cooperation in Southern Africa.

The Prime Minister’s participation signals Lesotho’s commitment to improving child welfare. It also reinforces the country’s support for joint regional action focused on children’s rights.
