Inclusive Lesotho: Election Cycle Support Project Holds First Steering Committee Meeting

The Inclusive Lesotho: Election Cycle Support Project, co-funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Union, held its first Project Steering Committee meeting, signaling a key step in strengthening democratic processes in Lesotho. The initiative is implemented by UNDP Lesotho in partnership with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to promote political stability, inclusiveness, and robust electoral systems.

The Steering Committee meeting was co-chaired by UNDP Resident Representative Dr. Jacqueline Olweya and IEC Chairman Mr. Mphasa Mokhochane. Their joint leadership highlights a shared commitment to supporting Lesotho’s democratic development and ensuring effective implementation of the project’s objectives.

The session was attended by Hon. Lebona Lephema, Minister of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs and Police, reflecting strong national support for the initiative. The meeting focused on reviewing project milestones, guiding strategic decisions, and enhancing coordination among key stakeholders to achieve tangible results.

The project aims to strengthen electoral processes by fostering inclusivity, improving access to election information, and building the capacity of institutions responsible for overseeing free and fair elections. It also supports initiatives to engage citizens and marginalized groups in political processes, reinforcing the principles of democracy in Lesotho.

The establishment of the Steering Committee ensures that the project is guided by collaboration, transparency, and accountability. Stakeholders emphasized that sustained partnership between UNDP, the European Union, government ministries, and the IEC is critical for building resilient democratic institutions.

By promoting inclusive participation and institutional capacity, the Inclusive Lesotho: Election Cycle Support Project seeks to create a more stable political environment and reinforce public confidence in Lesotho’s electoral system.
