Minister Thabo Mofosi Urges Investment in Agricultural Machinery in Lesotho

The Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, Mr. Thabo Mofosi, has called on Lesotho’s business community to invest in agricultural machinery to strengthen the country’s farming sector.
Speaking at the monthly Basotho Flee Market along Kingsway in Maseru, Minister Mofosi highlighted the shortage of essential farming equipment, particularly combine harvesters, as a major challenge facing local agriculture. He emphasized that modern machinery is critical to increasing harvest efficiency and ensuring crops are harvested at their peak value.
Minister Mofosi also outlined a government initiative aimed at supporting farmers. The program offers a 30 percent subsidy for agricultural machinery purchased through Post Bank Lesotho. This incentive is designed to make investment in farming equipment more accessible and to encourage the adoption of modern agricultural practices.
The Minister urged both private investors and farmers to take advantage of the program, noting that mechanized farming can improve productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and strengthen food security nationwide. He stressed that collaboration between government, businesses, and farmers is key to transforming Lesotho’s agriculture sector into a sustainable and profitable industry.
By promoting investment in agricultural machinery, the government aims to modernize farming practices, support smallholder farmers, and ensure that Lesotho’s agricultural output meets the growing demands of the local and regional markets.
