Lesotho Reaffirms Commitment to Human Rights at UPR 60th Session

Lesotho has accepted its Universal Periodic Review (UPR) report, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening human rights during the 60th Session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The country accepted 230 of the 247 recommendations presented, covering key issues including combating human trafficking, reducing maternal and child mortality, and addressing poverty. The acceptance signals Lesotho’s dedication to advancing social and economic rights while aligning with international human rights standards.

In his remarks, Minister of Law and Justice, Mr. Richard Ramoeletsi, emphasized that the UPR process encourages national debate on sensitive topics, including the rights of sexual minorities. He highlighted progress in political stability, noting that Lesotho’s removal from the Southern African Development Community’s monitoring reflects the country’s reforms and governance improvements.

Minister Ramoeletsi acknowledged ongoing challenges, including widespread poverty and health burdens, while expressing gratitude to international partners for their continued support. He affirmed that the UPR process is continuous, serving as a framework for monitoring human rights implementation and promoting accountability.

Lesotho’s active participation in the UPR underscores its commitment to sustainable development, social justice, and inclusive governance, signaling the country’s determination to meet international obligations and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
