Qacha’s Nek Youth Ready to Raise Their Voices at National Children’s Parliament

Four young voices from Qacha’s Nek are set to represent their district at the upcoming National Children’s Parliament, scheduled for July 24 in Maseru. The young representatives—Bohlokoa Sefeane (15), Reitumetse Ramakongoana (17), Karabelo Khatlile (12), and Bohlokoa Jane (16)—underwent a comprehensive preparation session today, led by the District Child Protection Team (DCPT) under the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Social Development.
The session aimed to equip the children with the confidence and tools to actively engage in parliamentary discussions that place children’s rights and well-being at the forefront. Guided by experienced facilitators, the session featured returning participants Sefeane and Ramakongoana, who took the opportunity to mentor and support the new delegates.
“The Children’s Parliament is a platform where children raise real issues and influence decisions that affect them,” said Ms. Lerato Kopo, the District Child Welfare Officer. She highlighted the Parliament’s significance in encouraging youth participation in governance and decision-making, adding that the initiative is supported by UNICEF Lesotho and World Vision International Lesotho.
Ms. Kopo urged the children to fully embrace the opportunity. “Be vocal, express yourselves and participate. Own it in order to enjoy it,” she said, reinforcing the importance of confidence and self-expression in shaping impactful dialogue.
Bohlokoa Sefeane, who participated in last year’s Parliament, reflected on the experience as both “fun and educative.” However, she expressed concern that several key issues raised previously—including child labour, access to sanitary products for girls, and the criminalisation of child marriage—remain unresolved. Her remarks underline the urgency for continued advocacy and action.
The National Children’s Parliament provides a critical space for youth across Lesotho to engage directly with lawmakers and policy influencers. As Qacha’s Nek’s representatives prepare to take their seats among peers from other districts, their voices are expected to contribute meaningfully to discussions that shape a better future for all children in the country.
