Lesotho-Botswana Water Transfer Project Gains Momentum Through Regional Cooperation

The Lesotho-Botswana Water Transfer Project is making steady progress, thanks to collaborative efforts supported by the Orange-Senqu River Commission (ORASECOM). A significant step in this regional initiative was the completion of a survey for a proposed dam on the Makhaleng River in Malealea, Mafeteng, marking a milestone in water infrastructure development for Southern Africa.

This ambitious project is a joint effort involving Lesotho, Botswana, and South Africa, aimed at addressing water scarcity while strengthening diplomatic and economic ties across borders. During a recent official visit, Lesotho’s Minister of Natural Resources, Honourable Mohlomi Moleko, welcomed the President of Botswana, His Excellency Adv. Duma Gideon Boko, and his delegation.

Minister Moleko underscored the importance of the project not only as a water transfer solution but as a symbol of unity and shared responsibility among the nations. “Let us build a legacy for future generations—for sustainable development and prosperity,” he remarked, emphasising the long-term impact of the initiative.

President Boko echoed these sentiments, thanking His Majesty and the Minister for their hospitality. He reflected on the origins of the project, tracing it back to early discussions in 2011, when water ministers acknowledged Botswana’s pressing water needs. These early recognitions laid the foundation for what is now a regional strategy for sustainable water access.

Under the current agreement, Botswana is set to receive 150 million cubic metres of water annually, while Lesotho and South Africa will each receive 158 million cubic metres. This allocation highlights the project’s commitment to equitable distribution and mutual benefit.

President Boko reaffirmed Botswana’s dedication to the project, stating, “This moment reflects our continued partnership and shared vision. We fully support this endeavour and believe in its success for the greater good of our region.”

The Lesotho-Botswana Water Transfer Project stands as a landmark example of regional cooperation, addressing critical water challenges while promoting unity, development, and sustainability across Southern Africa.
