Lesotho Hotels and Hospitality Sector Sees Business Boost Ahead of King’s Birthday Celebrations in Berea

Berea, Lesotho – Members of the Lesotho Hotels and Hospitality Association (LHHA) in Berea are reporting a significant uptick in business activity as the nation prepares for the main event marking His Majesty King Letsie III’s birthday this Thursday. The celebrations, scheduled to take place at both district and national levels—with festivities in Bela-Bela and Teyateyaneng respectively—have attracted visitors, filling accommodation establishments around Teyateyaneng town and surrounding areas.

During interviews with several hospitality providers, optimism was palpable despite it being the winter season, a period that typically sees a drop in tourist numbers. Ms. Rose Makhoana, Assistant Manager at Ka-Pitseng, noted that the King’s birthday has brought a welcome surge in bookings. “Normally in winter, our clientele rate drops, but this time our rooms are fully booked. Most visitors are expected to check out on Friday,” she said.

While pleased with the current bookings, Ms. Makhoana expressed a hope that future national events could encourage visitors to stay longer, ideally for a week, allowing them to explore Berea’s local attractions and contribute more extensively to the region’s tourism sector.

Similarly, Mr. Itumeleng Francis Mokete, Marketing Officer at Blue Mountain Inn, confirmed that all rooms have been reserved for the week surrounding the King’s birthday. “This is a major boost for business. We have many local guests and there’s potential for international visitors as well,” he said.

The boost in occupancy rates ahead of the celebrations is a positive sign for Berea’s hospitality industry, signaling the important role national events play in stimulating local economies. As the countdown to the King’s birthday continues, hotels and guesthouses in Berea are gearing up to welcome an influx of guests, hoping that such occasions will continue to promote growth in tourism and hospitality across Lesotho.
