Lesotho and South Africa Commemorate Maseru Massacre, Honouring Shared History and Sacrifice

On Tuesday, Lesotho and South Africa jointly commemorated the Maseru Massacre at a ceremony hosted by the Transformation Resource Centre (TRC). The event honoured the victims, recognised their contribution to South Africa’s freedom struggle, and served as a reminder of the brutality of the apartheid era.
South African High Commissioner to Lesotho, Mrs. Constance Seoposengwe, highlighted the enduring bond between the two nations, rooted in shared history, sacrifice, and a common vision for peace and development. She paid tribute to the people of Lesotho for providing shelter to South African liberation fighters during apartheid, noting that their support came at a significant cost.
Recalling the events of December 9, 1982, Mrs. Seoposengwe described the deadly raid in Maseru, carried out by the apartheid regime, which claimed several lives. She stated that the massacre serves as a stark reminder of the price Basotho paid for standing in solidarity with South Africa’s liberation movements.
Mrs. Seoposengwe emphasised that Lesotho is more than a neighbouring country; it is a second home for South Africans, with deep cultural, historical, and family ties binding the two nations. She called for continued cooperation in governance, economic development, education, and infrastructure to strengthen democracy and deliver mutual benefits to the peoples of both countries.
The commemoration reinforced the importance of remembering past struggles while advancing collaboration and solidarity, ensuring that the sacrifices of the Maseru Massacre victims continue to inspire efforts toward regional unity and development.
