Central Bank of Lesotho Launches Upgraded Maloti Banknotes

On Tuesday, the Central Bank of Lesotho (CBL) officially launched upgraded Maloti banknotes at an event held at Lehakoe, Maseru, in the presence of key stakeholders. The upgrade aligns with global central bank practices to regularly review and enhance currency.
CBL Governor Dr. Maluke Letete described the launch as a historic milestone, noting that the upgrade goes beyond changes in design to reaffirm the bank’s commitment to security, trust, and accessibility. He explained that the new banknotes were upgraded for three main reasons, the first being enhanced security. In an era of advancing technology, counterfeit currency is increasing rapidly. The upgraded notes feature advanced watermarks, tactile elements for the visually impaired, and machine-readable features to protect both consumers and businesses.
Dr. Letete also highlighted that the new notes are made with improved materials, extending their lifespan and durability. He projected that the upgraded notes will remain in circulation for up to four years, benefiting the broader economy.
The design of the new banknotes reflects national heritage and culture while ensuring accessibility for all, including people with visual impairments. Dr. Letete emphasized that money belongs to everyone, not just the wealthy, and said the tactile features allow visually impaired individuals to identify notes by touch.
He further stressed that currency is a symbol of national sovereignty and stability, urging citizens to treat banknotes with care. Torn notes should be returned to CBL for replacement, and writing or damaging currency undermines its symbolic value.
Old banknotes will remain legal tender until an official announcement is made regarding their withdrawal. Businesses are advised not to refuse old notes, and citizens uncomfortable with them can exchange them at the nearest bank.
To ensure smooth public adoption, CBL will run awareness campaigns from January 2026, covering all districts, to educate citizens on the features of the new banknotes and proper handling practices. The launch represents a significant step in modernizing Lesotho’s currency while promoting security, accessibility, and national pride.
