Lesotho Hosts 2025 International Wool Textile Organisation Round Table, Highlighting Its Role in Global Fibre Industry

Lesotho took centre stage in the global wool and mohair sector last week by hosting the 2025 International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) Round Table, in partnership with the Lesotho National Wool and Mohair Growers Associations. The two-day event convened farmers, fibre specialists, researchers, global brands, processors, and financial institutions to explore sustainable practices and opportunities across the wool and mohair value chain.
His Majesty King Letsie III, Africa’s first Nutrition Ambassador, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the social and economic importance of the industry. He highlighted how wool and mohair have sustained rural households for generations, providing income, supporting healthcare, and enabling access to education. King Letsie III also noted that agriculture remains central to rural livelihoods, and the wool and mohair sectors continue to make critical contributions to national exports and GDP.
The Round Table offered Lesotho a platform to showcase its long-standing role in the global fibre value chain. It enabled local farmers, institutions, and associations to engage directly with international experts, exchanging knowledge on best practices, market trends, and technological innovations. Discussions focused on maintaining quality standards, improving rangeland management, investing in modern shearing and handling infrastructure, and strengthening market access for Basotho farmers.
This year’s dialogue came at a pivotal moment for the global fibre economy. Rising demand for certified sustainable textiles, pressure to reduce supply chain emissions, growth in regenerative grazing practices, and advances in traceability technologies are reshaping wool production, trade, and valuation. For Lesotho, one of the world’s leading suppliers of fine Merino wool and the second-largest producer of mohair, these developments carry significant national relevance.
The IWTO Round Table reinforced Lesotho’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and global collaboration. It also underscored the potential for the country to expand its influence in the international market while ensuring that local communities continue to benefit from the economic and social value of wool and mohair production.
