UNFPA Opens Youth Resource Centre in Thaba-Tseka to Empower Young People in Lesotho

Young people need access to information, opportunities and supportive environments to reach their full potential. Recognising this need, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has opened a Youth Resource Centre in Thaba-Tseka, Lesotho, providing a dedicated space where young people can access information, support and essential services. The centre represents a shared commitment to investing in youth development and creating opportunities that contribute to a brighter future for the next generation. Speaking during the opening ceremony, UNFPA Assistant Representative, Ms Motselisi Phakisi, expressed appreciation to everyone who contributed towards making the initiative possible. She said, “We are grateful to everyone who contributed to making this dream a reality,” highlighting the importance of collective efforts in establishing a resource that can benefit young people and their communities.

The opening of the Youth Resource Centre marks an important step towards strengthening youth support and development in Thaba-Tseka. The centre is designed to provide a safe and welcoming environment where young people can seek information, access support and learn about services relevant to their needs. Having a dedicated space for youth engagement can help make important information more accessible while encouraging young people to take an active role in decisions affecting their lives. It also provides an opportunity to connect young people with support systems that can help them navigate different challenges. By bringing services and information closer to the community, the centre aims to contribute to a more supportive environment for youth development.

UNFPA’s involvement reflects the importance of investing in young people as part of broader efforts to advance sustainable development. Young people represent an important part of society, and their well-being, education and participation influence the future of their communities. Providing access to accurate information and appropriate support can help them make informed decisions about their lives. Youth-focused facilities can also create opportunities for learning, personal development and meaningful engagement. When young people have access to supportive environments, they are better positioned to identify opportunities and develop the confidence to pursue their goals. The Youth Resource Centre therefore represents more than a physical facility because it reflects a commitment to helping young people build their capabilities and contribute positively to society.

Access to reliable information is particularly important during adolescence and early adulthood. Young people often need guidance on issues that affect their health, education, relationships and future opportunities. Without accessible and trustworthy information, they may struggle to make informed choices or identify where to seek assistance. A youth resource centre can help address this challenge by providing an accessible point where young people can obtain relevant information and support. It can also encourage open conversations about issues that affect their everyday experiences. By creating a safe environment for these interactions, the centre can help strengthen awareness, confidence and informed decision-making among young people in Thaba-Tseka.

The emphasis on creating a safe space is another important feature of the initiative. Young people need environments where they feel respected, supported and comfortable seeking assistance without fear of judgement. Such spaces can encourage participation and help young people communicate their concerns more openly. They can also strengthen connections between youth and the institutions or organisations responsible for providing support services. A welcoming environment is particularly important for young people who may face social, economic or personal challenges. The establishment of the centre demonstrates the value of creating community spaces that recognise young people’s needs and provide opportunities for constructive engagement.

The Youth Resource Centre also highlights the importance of collaboration in delivering meaningful development initiatives. Ms Phakisi’s appreciation of everyone who contributed to making the dream a reality recognises that projects benefiting communities often depend on shared responsibility. Government institutions, development organisations, community representatives and other stakeholders can all contribute to creating opportunities for young people. Their cooperation can help mobilise resources, strengthen service delivery and ensure that facilities respond to the needs of the communities they serve. Sustaining the benefits of the centre will also require continued commitment and active participation from relevant stakeholders. The opening therefore represents both the achievement of a shared goal and an opportunity to strengthen long-term cooperation around youth development.

For the Thaba-Tseka community, the centre provides an opportunity to strengthen local support for young people. Community-based facilities can help reduce barriers that prevent youth from accessing important information and services. They can also encourage stronger relationships between young people, service providers and community structures. Local participation is essential in ensuring that the centre remains relevant and responsive to the needs of its intended beneficiaries. Young people should have opportunities to contribute their views and help shape the activities and services offered through the facility. Their involvement can help create a sense of ownership and encourage greater use of the centre.

The initiative also draws attention to the wider importance of youth empowerment in Lesotho. Supporting young people requires more than recognising their potential because they also need practical opportunities to develop their skills, access information and participate in community life. Youth development efforts should create environments where young people can identify their strengths and make informed decisions about their future. Access to appropriate support services can help them address challenges and pursue opportunities with greater confidence. Community facilities such as the Youth Resource Centre can contribute to these efforts by providing a point of connection between young people and available resources. Strengthening such initiatives can support a more inclusive approach to development in which young people have meaningful opportunities to participate.

The opening of the Youth Resource Centre in Thaba-Tseka sends an important message about the value of investing in the next generation. Through this initiative, UNFPA and its partners have helped establish a space focused on information, support, opportunity and youth participation. Ms Motselisi Phakisi’s remarks recognised the collective effort behind the achievement and the importance of working together to create lasting benefits for communities. The centre’s long-term value will depend on its continued accessibility, relevance and ability to respond to the needs of young people. As young people engage with the opportunities available through the facility, they can become more informed, confident and active participants in their communities. Together, stakeholders and young people can build on this achievement and help shape a brighter future for Thaba-Tseka and Lesotho.
