BRIDGE Training on Political Financing Strengthens Transparency and Democratic Governance in Lesotho

The successful completion of the 4-day BRIDGE training on Political Financing and Party Funds marks a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen democratic governance and electoral integrity in Lesotho. The programme was supported by the European Union in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme, reflecting a shared commitment to improving transparency in political systems. The training brought together political leaders, civil society representatives, media professionals, and other key stakeholders. It created a platform for open dialogue on accountability, funding systems, and the responsible use of political resources. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to reinforce trust in democratic institutions through knowledge sharing and capacity building.

Strong participation defined the programme, with 36 out of 42 registered political parties actively engaging throughout the training period. This high turnout demonstrated strong interest in improving political finance systems and strengthening internal party governance structures. The sessions focused on practical approaches to transparency, including how parties manage funds and report financial activities. Participants also examined the role of oversight mechanisms in ensuring compliance with electoral laws and ethical standards. Discussions encouraged collaboration between institutions and emphasized the importance of consistent financial accountability across all political actors.

The workshop was officially closed by UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Dr. Taye Amassalu alongside the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission Lesotho, Rev. Dr. John Maphephe. Both leaders highlighted the critical role that transparent political financing plays in building public trust and safeguarding fair elections. They emphasized that accountability in party funding is essential for strengthening democratic processes and ensuring equal participation. The closing ceremony also featured the awarding of certificates to all participants in recognition of their active involvement and commitment to learning. The certificates symbolized not only completion of training but also a renewed responsibility to apply the knowledge gained in real political environments.

The training programme concluded with strong appreciation for all partners and participants who contributed to its success. Organizers acknowledged the European Union, the United Nations Development Programme, and the Independent Electoral Commission Lesotho for their continued support in strengthening democratic institutions. The initiative reinforced the importance of cooperation between international partners and national stakeholders in advancing good governance. It also highlighted the value of sustained capacity building in promoting transparency, accountability, and responsible leadership. The BRIDGE training has set a foundation for continued progress toward a more transparent and credible political landscape in Lesotho.
