Lesotho Highlands Development Authority Empowers Youth Through Second-Round Educational Campaign

From 17–27 March 2026, the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) conducted its second-round educational campaign across high schools in southern Lesotho. The initiative brought the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) directly to learners, demonstrating its critical role in water supply, hydroelectric power, and national economic growth. Many students face financial and logistical barriers that make site visits difficult, so LHDA partnered with the Ministry of Education to deliver interactive presentations, discussions, and career guidance directly in schools. The campaign aimed to show learners how the LHWP influences daily life and national development while inspiring them to explore potential career paths. By combining education with practical insights into the project, LHDA ensured that students gained a comprehensive understanding of the LHWP’s impact on Lesotho’s sustainable future.
During the campaign, learners engaged with the presentations and participated in discussions on engineering, tourism, environmental science, and development studies. The sessions allowed students to ask questions and explore how their skills and interests could align with the LHWP’s diverse opportunities. Teachers also expressed appreciation for the program, noting that it sparked conversations about careers previously unfamiliar to students. The campaign emphasized not just technical knowledge, but also the importance of environmental stewardship, innovation, and community involvement. This hands-on approach helped students connect classroom learning with real-world applications, giving them tangible examples of how they can contribute to national progress.
The educational campaign reached 28 high schools in Mohale’s Hoek District and 42 in Mafeteng District, reflecting LHDA’s commitment to broad community engagement. By focusing on youth empowerment, the initiative seeks to nurture a generation that is informed, skilled, and motivated to contribute meaningfully to Lesotho’s development journey. The program also strengthened the partnership between LHDA and the Ministry of Education, ensuring sustainability and continuity of outreach activities. Students left the sessions with greater awareness of career options and a clearer understanding of how large-scale projects like the LHWP shape the country’s future. In conclusion, LHDA’s second-round educational campaign successfully combined learning, inspiration, and practical guidance, reinforcing its mission to empower young Basotho and prepare them to play active roles in Lesotho’s growth and sustainable development.
