Over the years, access to education for many Basotho children has gone beyond classrooms and textbooks. For these children, having shoes, school uniforms, and essential learning resources is critical to participating fully in school and feeling included. Recognizing this need, the Honorable Prime Minister’s Golf Tournament has become a vital platform for supporting children’s education. On its second edition last Friday, the tournament successfully raised over M6 million, a significant increase from the M1 million raised during the inaugural 2025 event. These funds aim to transform the lives of Basotho children, particularly those with disabilities, by providing resources that enable them to learn comfortably alongside their peers.
The fundraising success is a result of strong participation from top players representing companies, private businesses, international organizations, government agencies, and ministries. Each participant contributed their own money to compete in the round-the-clock golf tournament, highlighting a shared commitment to social development and education. In addition to the competition, a dinner was held in the evening, where companies and individuals made further donations to support the project. This combined effort demonstrates the power of public and private sector collaboration in addressing educational challenges. The initiative not only raises funds but also increases awareness about the barriers faced by children with disabilities and the importance of inclusive education in Lesotho.
The tournament received sponsorship and support from leading organizations, including Vodacom Lesotho through the Vodacom Lesotho Foundation, Econet Telecom Lesotho through the HigherLife Foundation, UNICEF Lesotho, the Petroleum Fund, the Ministry of Education and Training, and the Office of the Prime Minister. Their involvement ensures that the funds raised are effectively directed toward impactful programs, such as providing school uniforms, shoes, and other resources necessary for learning. By mobilizing resources and fostering collaboration between businesses, government, and international agencies, the initiative strengthens the foundation for long-term educational improvements. The 2026 tournament sets a new benchmark in fundraising and community engagement, showing how collective action can significantly improve children’s educational opportunities. In conclusion, the Honorable Prime Minister’s Golf Tournament exemplifies a practical and effective approach to transforming education for Basotho children, ensuring they have the tools and support needed to succeed academically and socially.
