Ministry of Public Works and Transport Trains Thaba-Tseka Police on Online Road Accident Mapping

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport, through its Road Safety Department, has begun training police officers in Thaba-Tseka District on a new digital method for recording road accidents called the Road Accident Management System. This initiative is part of the ministry’s mission to reduce road accidents and protect public health across Lesotho. The system replaces the manual LMPS 29 form previously used by officers, allowing accident data to be captured directly at the scene. The digital method enables faster reporting, better coordination with relevant departments, and more accurate storage of road accident records. These improvements support both legal processes and data analysis for safer road planning.
The training sessions in Thaba-Tseka were attended by the District Traffic Manager, Sub-Inspector Seqobela Thamae, and officers from local police units. The sessions were officially opened by Deputy Commissioner of Thaba-Tseka Police, Senior Inspector Sepalo Kelepa, representing the District Manager. During the sessions, officers learned to enter accident details online immediately after incidents occur, ensuring that data is complete and accurate. The digital system allows the Road Safety Department to identify accident trends and high-risk locations more effectively. This helps in designing targeted interventions to prevent accidents and protect public health.
The Road Accident Management System also improves collaboration between departments by sharing accident information for legal action when required. Data from the system is used to generate accurate reports for government agencies and the public, increasing transparency and accountability. Officers are trained to upload detailed maps, incident photographs, and witness statements directly into the system. The technology also supports analysis to determine root causes of accidents and prioritize road safety measures. Overall, the system represents a significant step toward modernizing Lesotho’s approach to traffic management and public safety.
