Ministry of Information Collaborates on AI Development for Sesotho Language

The Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr. Kanono Ramashamole, held a follow-up meeting in Maseru with a consultant from the United Nations Development Programme and representatives from the National University of Lesotho. The discussions continued from the AI Digital Academy session held on 11th February 2026, focusing on artificial intelligence systems that can operate in the Sesotho language. A central topic was the Sesotho word bank being compiled by the National University of Lesotho, which will serve as the foundation for training AI systems to process and generate content in Sesotho. The initiative aims to make social media, digital platforms, and online services more accessible to Sesotho speakers. By integrating the language into AI systems, the project ensures that technology reflects local culture and communication needs.
Mrs. Mathe Nts’ekhe, the UNDP consultant, emphasized that the project will benefit multiple sectors in Lesotho, including healthcare, agriculture, and social communication. In healthcare, AI could help patients who are not fluent in English by providing translations and guidance in Sesotho, reducing language barriers and improving access to essential services. In agriculture, AI tools in Sesotho could support farmers with information on weather patterns, crop management, and market trends. The project also aims to strengthen cultural heritage by promoting the Sesotho language in digital spaces where it has been underrepresented. By making AI capable of understanding and using Sesotho, the initiative encourages pride in the language while supporting its continued relevance in modern technology.
The collaboration highlights the government’s commitment to digital innovation that is inclusive and culturally aware. Training AI in Sesotho allows broader participation in online platforms and ensures that technological advancements serve local communities effectively. The Sesotho word bank will act as a key resource for future AI applications, from chatbots to educational tools. Officials and consultants stressed the importance of maintaining accuracy, cultural context, and linguistic nuances in the AI training process. Overall, the initiative represents a strategic step in blending technology with local language preservation and community empowerment in Lesotho.
