Lesotho Government Advances Digital Transformation Through Partnership with Econet Telecom Lesotho

The Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation in Lesotho has taken a decisive step toward full government digitalization by forging a strategic partnership with Econet Telecom Lesotho. This collaboration aims to accelerate the digital transformation of public services and modernize how government institutions operate. As countries across Africa invest heavily in digital infrastructure, Lesotho is positioning itself to improve efficiency, transparency, and service delivery through technology. The move signals a strong commitment to building a connected government that can meet the demands of citizens and businesses. By aligning with a major telecommunications provider, the ministry is strengthening the technical backbone required to implement nationwide digital systems.
The meeting that formalized the partnership was led by Principal Secretary Kanono Ramashamole, Director General ICT Thapeli Tjabane, and Director ICT Khiba Masiu. They engaged with Econet Telecom Lesotho representatives including Chief Technical Officer Malefetsane Tlelima and General Manager Sales Lebohang Ramaisa. The discussions focused on progress achieved so far in the digitalization roadmap and outlined new plans to reach the proposed project goals. Government officials reviewed existing infrastructure, connectivity gaps, and system integration challenges that must be addressed. Econet Telecom Lesotho presented technical solutions designed to improve network reliability, data security, and scalability across ministries.
Digital transformation in government is not limited to moving documents online. It involves restructuring workflows, integrating databases, and deploying secure communication systems that allow departments to share information in real time. Through this partnership, the Government of Lesotho aims to digitize administrative processes, improve e government services, and reduce manual paperwork that slows down service delivery. For citizens, this shift can translate into faster access to permits, licenses, and other public services. For businesses, it can reduce compliance delays and enhance transparency in government transactions. Reliable broadband connectivity and cloud based systems will play a central role in achieving these outcomes.
The collaboration also reflects a broader national vision to strengthen Lesotho’s ICT sector and expand digital inclusion. By leveraging Econet Telecom Lesotho’s technical capacity, the ministry can roll out secure digital platforms that support education, healthcare, and public administration. Strong telecommunications infrastructure forms the foundation for smart governance, data management, and cybersecurity. The meeting further emphasized monitoring mechanisms to track implementation milestones and ensure accountability. As the partnership advances, stakeholders will focus on measurable targets that demonstrate real progress toward a fully digital government ecosystem in Lesotho.
