Lesotho to Celebrate World Braille Day

The Lesotho Network for the Development of the Blind (LNDB) and the Lesotho Distance Learning Centre (LDTC) will mark World Braille Day on Friday this week. The event honours Louis Braille, the French educator who invented the braille system, a method of reading and writing designed for people with visual impairments.

The commemoration aims to highlight the importance of braille literacy and the need for wider access to braille learning materials. It seeks to benefit both visually impaired and sighted individuals by promoting understanding and inclusion. Organisers emphasise that increased access to braille is crucial for education, communication, and empowerment of persons with disabilities.

LNDB and LDTC are using the occasion to raise awareness about braille and to advocate for its adoption in schools nationwide. They are calling on stakeholders, including government agencies and private organisations, to invest in accessible learning formats. The organisations stress that such investments are essential to ensure that visually impaired learners receive equitable educational opportunities.

In a statement, LNDB urged all Basotho to support the rights of persons with disabilities and to engage with braille literacy. “Braille is a gateway to dignity and independence,” the organisation said, highlighting its role in fostering self-reliance and inclusion.

The World Braille Day celebration in Lesotho is expected to strengthen advocacy for accessible education and encourage greater recognition of the needs and rights of visually impaired citizens. It reinforces the message that literacy and accessibility are central to empowering all members of society.
