Lesotho Farmers Boost Agribusiness Skills Through CAFI Workshop

The Competitiveness and Financial Inclusion Project (CAFI) under the Ministry of Agriculture recently held a two-day workshop in Mahobong, Leribe, aimed at training fruit farmers on agribusiness and market access. The workshop brought together farmers from Likhotola, Maoa-Mafubelu, Likhetlane, and Tšakholo in Mafeteng. CAFI trainer Mr Lehlohonolo Mpholle explained that vegetable and fruit production in Lesotho is generally low, with higher outputs in peaches and apples. The initiative seeks to improve sustainable agriculture and equip farmers with marketing strategies to reach larger markets.

Mr Mpholle highlighted that many farmers lack knowledge on how to move their produce from farms to markets. The workshop focused on practical strategies to increase production and market access. He recommended planting more fruit trees and protecting them with shade nets, which are more affordable than greenhouses. Shade nets create a suitable environment for trees, protect them from storms, and help ensure that fruits reach the market fresh and clean.

For marketing, Mr Mpholle encouraged farmers to embrace digital tools. Digital marketing can quickly reach a wide audience and improve product visibility. Farmers were also advised to engage directly with supermarket managers to understand market demands, including quality and quantity requirements. These strategies aim to help farmers transition from subsistence to commercial farming by producing larger volumes of high-quality fruit.

The workshop also addressed climate-related challenges affecting fruit production. Farmers learned that shade nets can mitigate the effects of climate change, protecting crops from extreme weather and storms. CAFI plans to supply farmers with additional fruit trees and shade nets to support large-scale production and improve yields.

Ministry of Agriculture Marketing Officer Miss Nothembile Nobala emphasized that Basotho are increasingly entering agribusiness but often struggle with marketing their products. She stated that agriculture not only improves farmers’ social and economic status but also contributes to job creation and national economic growth.

Farmers attending the workshop expressed optimism. Mr Mothiba Thamae from Mountain Fruits Grower noted that the training provided practical insights on digital marketing, connecting with supermarkets, and collaboration with other fruit producers. He said these strategies will help farmers sell their produce while ensuring it remains fresh and of high quality. With CAFI’s support, Lesotho’s fruit farmers are better positioned to expand production, access markets, and grow profitable agribusinesses despite challenges like climate change.
