Lesotho Strengthens Partnership with WFP to Combat Food Insecurity

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Honourable Lejone Mpotjoana, today received the Letters of Representation from Ms. Anna Mukiibi-Bunnya, World Food Programme (WFP) Representative and Country Director to Lesotho. The meeting reaffirmed the Government of Lesotho’s appreciation for its longstanding partnership with WFP, guided by the Second-Generation Country Strategic Plan (2024–2029). This plan aligns closely with Lesotho’s National Strategic Development Plan II and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 2 on Zero Hunger and SDG 17 on Partnerships.

During the meeting, the Government recognized WFP’s interventions as critical in addressing food insecurity and malnutrition across Lesotho. Key initiatives include school feeding programmes, emergency assistance, nutrition projects, and climate-resilient support targeting vulnerable communities. These programmes help ensure that children, families, and other at-risk groups have access to adequate nutrition while building resilience to climate and economic shocks.

Minister Mpotjoana reiterated the government’s full commitment to supporting WFP’s mandate. He emphasized strengthening collaboration to build resilient food systems, protect vulnerable populations, and promote sustainable development. Both parties agreed that continued partnership is essential to advancing food security, reducing hunger, and improving livelihoods for all Basotho.

The meeting highlighted the shared vision of government and WFP to enhance strategic interventions, expand programme reach, and ensure that Lesotho’s most vulnerable communities receive timely, effective, and sustainable support. This partnership remains central to the country’s efforts to achieve long-term food security and development goals.
