Lesotho Set to Boost Digital Connectivity with LIXP Upgrade

On Tuesday in Maseru, the Internet Society Lesotho (ISOC) highlighted the importance of the Lesotho Internet Exchange Point (LIXP) for the country’s digital ecosystem. Speaking at the event, ISOC Acting Chairperson Miss Maneo Maphorisa described LIXP as a physical location where multiple networks exchange internet traffic. She emphasized that LIXP is a key part of Lesotho’s internet infrastructure, enabling faster and more reliable connectivity for both urban and rural communities. ISOC continues to work on strengthening local connectivity, improving internet performance, and ensuring that digital access supports innovation and social progress across the country.

ISOC member Mr Diaho Monaheng outlined Lesotho’s internet challenges, noting that limited rural connectivity and geographical barriers restrict internet penetration. Many remote communities lack reliable internet access, and service costs remain high. To address these issues, the Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) has been granted 700,000 to upgrade the LIXP. This project, first implemented in 2011, will be revamped in 2026 to enhance local traffic exchange and ensure communication between networks remains functional even if international links fail. Server upgrades are planned every three to five years to maintain optimal performance.

LCA IT specialist Miss Limpho Ramollo explained that the LIXP upgrade will improve Lesotho’s digital resilience. By localizing internet traffic, the country can maintain a stable and secure network even during international connectivity disruptions. The upgrade will allow website queries to be resolved within Lesotho, improving security and reducing dependence on global servers. LIXP will also support disaster preparedness by keeping government services, businesses, and emergency services operational during network interruptions.

ISOC Global Chairperson Mr Chislain Nkerumugaba highlighted that the LIXP upgrade will attract more network providers and generate job opportunities. He noted that Africa currently has only three major hubs in South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya, and Lesotho’s new hub will join this network, enhancing regional digital capacity. The LIXP project is expected to significantly strengthen Lesotho’s internet infrastructure, promote local connectivity, and support the country’s broader digital transformation goals.
