Lesotho Explores Zambia’s Partnership Model to Strengthen Health Service Delivery

The Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Lesotho recently undertook a learning visit to Zambia aimed at strengthening health service delivery through strategic partnerships. The visit focused on how collaboration can improve access to healthcare, especially in rural and underserved communities.
During the engagement, the Zambian Ministry of Health shared its experience of working with faith based health institutions. A key partner is the Churches Health Association of Zambia, known as CHAZ. These facilities play a critical role in delivering essential health services in remote areas where public health facilities are limited. This approach has helped Zambia close service gaps and reach vulnerable communities.
The Lesotho delegation examined how the partnership model functions in practice. Discussions focused on the allocation of responsibilities, funding arrangements, and accountability systems. Zambia explained that faith based health facilities are fully integrated into the national health system and operate under government policies and national health priorities. This integration supports equitable access to health services across the country.
Zambia also outlined the support provided by government to partner facilities. This includes financial subsidies, supply of medicines and medical equipment, and support for health personnel. These measures help facilities maintain affordable, reliable, and quality services for communities.
The learning visit highlighted the importance of coordination, regular engagement, and joint planning between government and partners. Zambia shared how this approach has strengthened service delivery in key areas such as maternal and child health, HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and community health services.
The Ministry of Health of Lesotho welcomed the insights gained from the visit and acknowledged the value of partnerships built on trust, clear communication, and shared responsibility. The experience from Zambia offers practical lessons that can be adapted to the Lesotho context.
The Ministry expressed confidence that the knowledge gained will contribute to stronger health sector partnerships in Lesotho and improved access to quality healthcare for all Basotho.
