Lesotho Validates Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy to Strengthen the Sector

The Ministry of Agriculture Food Security and Nutrition, with support from the Food and Agricultural Organisation, held a three day validation workshop on fisheries and aquaculture policy and strategy in Maseru on Wednesday. The workshop brought together officials, experts, and stakeholders to refine guidelines that will shape the country’s fisheries sector.
Minister Thabo Mofosi said the fisheries industry has played a marginal role in Lesotho’s economy for many years. He explained that fisheries were not developed as part of the national agricultural agenda. Instead, they were used to entertain colonial officials who viewed the country’s rivers as suitable for sport fishing.
He stated that proper coordination and targeted incentives can help Lesotho build a fully developed fisheries industry. He added that the right strategy can open opportunities for income generation, food security, and rural development.
The Minister urged all stakeholders to improve the implementation of policies linked to fisheries and aquaculture. He said strong coordination is necessary to support investment, expand production, and ensure communities benefit from available resources.
Participants reviewed the policy framework and shared practical recommendations to strengthen regulation, support fish farmers, and improve environmental management. They also explored ways to expand aquaculture and introduce modern practices that can raise productivity.
The workshop concluded with agreement on the need to accelerate the development of the fisheries sector. The refined policy and strategy will guide future interventions and help Lesotho grow the industry in a structured and sustainable way.
