Lesotho and Armenia Establish Formal Diplomatic Relations

On Wednesday, 12 November 2025, the Kingdom of Lesotho and the Republic of Armenia formally established diplomatic relations. The Permanent Representative of Lesotho to the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Matete ‘Nena, signed a Joint Communiqué confirming the agreement. H.E. Mr. Paruyr Hovhannisyan, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, signed on behalf of his government.

The signing marks a new chapter in bilateral cooperation and opens opportunities for collaboration on issues of mutual interest in multilateral forums. Both Lesotho and Armenia are members of the Least Developed Countries (LLDCs), which provides a shared platform for addressing common development challenges.

Potential areas of cooperation include capacity building in diplomacy, information and communication technology, and health. These initiatives aim to strengthen institutional capabilities, improve service delivery, and foster sustainable development in both countries.

The agreement also aligns with upcoming international engagements. Armenia will host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) in Yerevan from 18 to 30 October 2026. The conference will focus on implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and advancing strategies for biodiversity protection.

The establishment of diplomatic ties underscores both countries’ commitment to international cooperation, sustainable development, and shared progress through multilateral engagement.
