Lesotho Advances National and Regional Health Security

The Minister of Health, Mr. Selibe Mochoboroane, has praised Lesotho’s progress in strengthening national and regional health security. He attributed the country’s achievements to a combination of international treaties and strong national commitments.

Speaking at the ongoing Joint External Evaluation (JEE) in Maseru, Mr. Mochoboroane highlighted milestones that reflect Lesotho’s commitment to global health standards and preparedness. He emphasized that since the adoption of the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) in 2007, Lesotho has maintained a dedicated coordinating office within the Ministry of Health. This office ensures compliance with international obligations and coordinates responses to public health emergencies effectively.

The Minister also noted Lesotho’s adoption of all editions of the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) guidelines. These guidelines have been supported by extensive training programs at all levels, including community outreach, to improve early detection and rapid response to health threats.

In addition, the successful completion of the State Party Annual Reports (SPAR) has strengthened multi-sectoral engagement and accountability. Mr. Mochoboroane highlighted that this step ensures transparency and fosters collective responsibility in maintaining national health security.

On risk management, the Minister explained that conducting risk assessments using the Strategic Tool for Assessing Risks (STAR) has helped the Ministry develop targeted response plans. These plans address specific health threats, enhancing Lesotho’s capacity to manage potential outbreaks effectively.

Lesotho’s approach demonstrates a structured framework that combines international standards, community involvement, and evidence-based planning. The country’s efforts continue to position it as a regional model for proactive and coordinated health security measures.
