MERCK Partners with NUL to Launch Curiosity Cube, Inspiring STEM Learning in Lesotho

MERCK, a leading German science and technology company, has partnered with the National University of Lesotho (NUL) to bring the Curiosity Cube, a mobile science lab, to local learners. The lab will be at NUL from October 28 to November 07 before moving to Soofia International School from November 10 to 14.

The opening ceremony welcomed students from Christ the King and Itekeng High Schools. Launched in 2025, the Curiosity Cube delivers hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) experiences to students aged eight to 13 worldwide. The initiative targets grassroots learners, engaging them in interactive STEM activities to spark early interest in technology.

Curiosity Cube Lead Africa, Ms. Rachel Homerku, said the initiative aims to captivate and inspire young minds. This year, the focus is on Artificial Intelligence (AI), with activities tailored for primary and post-primary students. Sessions include interactive games such as Auto-Bot, a self-driven AI car that follows paths drawn by students; Guess Who, teaching children to distinguish between AI-generated and human images; and Light Bright, demonstrating how AI mirrors human behaviour.

Ms. Homerku emphasized the importance of nurturing technological skills and ethical awareness early, giving children the chance to envision careers in science and innovation.

NUL Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Kananelo Mosito welcomed the partnership, describing it as a milestone in the university’s pursuit of excellence. He highlighted the growing demand for STEM professionals and said the initiative helps students see themselves in these careers, inspiring curiosity and ambition.

The Curiosity Cube initiative positions Lesotho as a hub for STEM engagement, fostering practical learning and encouraging the next generation to explore technology-driven solutions.
