Lesotho’s Bold Vision at UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries

At the third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (#LLDC3) held in Awaza, Turkmenistan, Honourable Lejone Mpotjoana presented a powerful message. He challenged the common view that geography limits development. Instead, he said geography can open doors to opportunity.

Honourable Mpotjoana highlighted Lesotho’s unique strengths. He pointed to the country’s vast hydropower and clean energy potential. He also emphasized eco-tourism and pristine aquaculture as key sectors for growth. He declared, “Our majestic Maloti Mountains are not boundaries—they are the bedrock of our potential.”

Lesotho’s mountains provide more than natural beauty. They offer resources to generate renewable energy and support sustainable tourism. These sectors can drive economic growth while protecting the environment.

However, Honourable Mpotjoana did not stop at celebration. He issued a clear call for global justice. He urged the international community to reform unfair financial systems that limit progress for landlocked developing countries (LLDCs). He stressed the urgent need to unlock climate financing tailored for LLDCs. These resources are crucial for them to adapt to climate change and develop sustainably.

“The time for rhetoric is over. The time for decisive action and tangible resource commitments is now,” he said.

His message highlights a broader challenge faced by LLDCs worldwide. Geography poses transport and trade hurdles, increasing costs and limiting market access. But with the right global support, these countries can turn challenges into competitive advantages.

Lesotho’s vision aligns with international goals for sustainable development. By investing in renewable energy, eco-tourism, and aquaculture, the country can create jobs, reduce poverty, and protect natural resources.

The conference in Turkmenistan provided a platform for LLDCs to advocate for fair policies and partnerships. Honourable Mpotjoana’s speech captured the urgency and hope of many countries facing similar geographic constraints.

Lesotho’s call for action sends a clear message: development is possible with justice, investment, and cooperation. The world must respond with concrete steps to support LLDCs’ growth and resilience.

This moment demands more than words. It requires funding reforms, climate finance access, and partnerships that empower landlocked nations. Lesotho stands ready to lead by example and unlock its full potential.
