Science and Mathematics Key to Economic Growth, Says Lesotho Official at National Science Fair

The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr. Kanono Ramashamole, has emphasized that science and mathematics are fundamental drivers of economic development. He made these remarks during the official opening of the 56th Annual National Science Fair in Maseru, a highly anticipated event organized by the Lesotho Science and Mathematics Teachers Association (LSMTA).

The three-day fair, which began on Wednesday, brought together approximately 600 students from across the country. The event provided a platform for young minds to demonstrate scientific knowledge, creativity, and practical applications of what they have learned in classrooms. Participants presented innovation projects that reflect their understanding of science and mathematics in real-world contexts.

In his address, Mr. Ramashamole described science and mathematics as the engines of national development and key instruments in shaping a competitive, knowledge-based economy. He praised the National Science Fair for being a fertile ground to nurture innovation among the youth and prepare them for roles in shaping the future of Lesotho’s economy.

“This annual event is not just an exhibition; it is a space where the future of our country takes shape. Innovation begins in the minds of our learners, and this fair is where we see that spark come alive,” he said.

The fair aligns with broader national objectives to encourage STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and equip learners with skills relevant for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Teachers, policymakers, and industry partners attending the event shared insights and encouraged students to pursue careers in science, technology, and innovation.

With Lesotho aiming to build a knowledge-driven economy, platforms like the National Science Fair are increasingly seen as essential. The event not only showcases talent but also builds confidence in students to solve real-life challenges using scientific methods.

As the fair concluded, the message was clear: investing in science and mathematics education is an investment in the country’s future. Through events like this, Lesotho is taking bold steps to empower its youth and lay the foundation for sustained economic growth through innovation.
