Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane Says Land Reclamation Is Not a Crime, Urges for Calm and Due Process

Maseru, Lesotho – Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane has weighed in on the national debate surrounding land reclamation, declaring that there is nothing wrong with people wanting their land back — so long as it is done through legal and peaceful means. Speaking during a nationally televised address on Tuesday evening, the Prime Minister invoked a Sesotho proverb to highlight the legitimacy of ancestral land claims: “Tsabo Moshemane ha li jeoe, u li je u li siee masapo hobane ha hola o tla li tseka” — loosely translated, “Do not consume all a young man’s inheritance, leave the bones, for when he grows up, he will reclaim them.”

His comments come in light of the recent arrest of Member of Parliament Dr. Ts’epo Lipholo, a development that has stirred public reaction and concern. The Prime Minister confirmed that the arrest was related to broader investigations currently underway, with law enforcement handling the matter through formal legal channels.

“We are fully aware that the situation has been mismanaged in a way that is now causing havoc and taking a wrong turn,” Mr. Matekane said. “This has the potential to undermine Lesotho’s peace, security, and stability — something we must never compromise as a nation.”

He stressed that while the arrest of Dr. Lipholo is part of a legal process, the core issue of land reclamation is valid and was among the matters identified during the Plenary session of the Reforms Process. “It is not wrong for Basotho to desire the return of their land,” he said, “but this must be done in a structured and inclusive manner.”

The Prime Minister assured the nation that government would engage both leaders and the public at an appropriate time to map a clear and peaceful way forward regarding land issues. He also called on all citizens to act responsibly and avoid any actions that could destabilize the country.

“As a government, we appeal to all sectors of the public to avoid acts that can affect peace, stability, and the development of our nation,” he concluded.

The statement marks a firm yet conciliatory tone from the Prime Minister, who acknowledged public sentiment while emphasizing the importance of law, order, and national unity.
