Lesotho Electricity Company Signs 25-Year Agreement for Neo 1 Solar Plant

The Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) has signed a 25-year power purchasing agreement with U.S. energy developer OnePower to construct the Neo 1 solar plant. The project, valued at $25 million, is set to generate 24 megawatts of power, significantly boosting Lesotho’s energy capacity.

The Neo 1 project will feature 36,000 solar panels and a 33kv power line, contributing nearly a quarter of the country’s current electricity output. The plant is designed to provide reliable and uninterrupted power to Basotho, supporting economic growth and energy security.

This agreement marks the second energy deal between Lesotho and U.S. partners this month, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to international collaboration and private sector investment in critical infrastructure. The partnership demonstrates Lesotho’s focus on sustainable energy solutions and its efforts to expand access to electricity nationwide.

By investing in solar power, Lesotho aims to diversify its energy mix, reduce dependency on imported electricity, and meet growing domestic demand. The Neo 1 solar plant represents a strategic step toward modernizing the national grid and promoting long-term energy sustainability for the country.
