Lesotho and Ethiopia Strengthen Cooperation in Key Development Sectors

The Kingdom of Lesotho and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia are advancing a renewed partnership focused on sectors critical to sustainable development and regional integration. Building on a bilateral cooperation agreement signed in 2012, both countries are aligning their agenda with Africa’s broader development priorities. The cooperation framework covers multiple sectors, with current focus on water resource management, agriculture and food security, aviation, and health and nutrition. This approach aims to translate political goodwill into practical initiatives that support inclusive growth and capacity building.
Lesotho brings experience in integrated water management and transboundary water governance, offering opportunities for knowledge exchange with Ethiopia. Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s advances in agricultural productivity, aviation infrastructure, and public health provide models for technical collaboration and technology transfer. By combining expertise, the two nations can strengthen institutional capacities, improve service delivery, and support sustainable development outcomes. This partnership emphasizes actionable programmes rather than symbolic engagement.
Momentum for the renewed cooperation was reinforced during a bilateral meeting at the African Union Summit in February 2026. Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Gideon Timothewos, and Lesotho’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Lejone Mpotjoane, reaffirmed their commitment to operationalizing the 2012 agreement. The discussions highlighted sector-specific cooperation mechanisms, regular consultations, and practical programmes to enhance development outcomes. These engagements provide a roadmap for translating high-level commitments into measurable results on the ground.
H.E. Ntsiuoa Sekete, Lesotho’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, emphasized the potential for tangible outcomes through this partnership. Strengthening food systems resilience, improving air connectivity, advancing health and nutrition, and managing water resources sustainably are central objectives. The collaboration is expected to generate mutual benefits, support regional integration, and foster knowledge sharing across both countries. By focusing on concrete actions and shared priorities, Lesotho and Ethiopia aim to set a model for regional cooperation in Southern and Eastern Africa.
