Lesotho Ministers Meet Basotho in Diaspora During SWSSD Summit in Doha

Lesotho government ministers engaged with Basotho nationals living in Qatar during the Second World Summit for Social Development (SWSSD2) held in Doha. The meeting aimed to strengthen ties with the diaspora and promote collaboration on national development goals. The delegation included the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Hon. Lejone Mopotjoane, the Minister of Gender, Youth and Social Development, Hon. Pitso Lesaoana, and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Hon. T’seliso Mokhosi. They were joined by Lesotho’s Ambassadors and senior officials representing the Kingdom at the global forum.
The ministers met with Basotho working and studying in Qatar to discuss their welfare, employment opportunities, and ways to contribute to Lesotho’s economic growth. The engagement was part of a broader effort to enhance communication between the government and the diaspora community. Hon. Mopotjoane emphasized the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic and social ties with citizens abroad. He highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to create an enabling environment that supports Basotho professionals returning home and those seeking to invest in local enterprises.
Hon. Lesaoana focused on youth empowerment and social inclusion. He encouraged Basotho youth in Qatar to acquire skills and experiences that can help strengthen Lesotho’s human resource base. He also underscored the government’s commitment to building inclusive social programs that benefit citizens both at home and abroad. Hon. Mokhosi addressed the need for fair employment practices and labor protection for Basotho working in foreign countries. He assured the community that the government continues to engage with host nations to safeguard workers’ rights and ensure decent working conditions.
The ministers acknowledged the positive role Basotho in the diaspora play through remittances and knowledge transfer. They expressed appreciation for their contributions to Lesotho’s development and urged them to remain active partners in national initiatives. The meeting in Doha also provided a platform for open dialogue, allowing Basotho nationals to raise concerns about documentation, employment regulations, and access to consular services. The delegation pledged to follow up on these issues to strengthen government service delivery abroad.
Lesotho’s participation in the SWSSD2 highlighted its commitment to advancing social justice, equity, and inclusive growth. The ministers reaffirmed that partnerships with the diaspora remain key to achieving the country’s Vision 2050 goals. The event ended with a renewed call for unity and cooperation among Basotho living overseas, emphasizing that every citizen plays a role in shaping the nation’s future.
