Lesotho Students Showcase Science Projects at Gauteng Event Despite Transport Challenges

Representatives of the Lesotho Science and Maths Teachers Association highlighted a notable achievement for Basotho students in Gauteng this week. On Wednesday, students from Sefate Sa Bophelo English Medium and Holy Names High School presented their science projects at an event organized by the Gauteng branch of the Science, Technology, and Communication department.
Mr. Neo Mohlekoa from Qacha’s Nek, speaking to the press on Thursday, explained that the students’ projects had been selected based on merit and innovation. These projects represent the growing interest and talent among Lesotho’s young learners in science and technology fields.
One of the students from Sefate Sa Bophelo English Medium faced financial constraints that made it impossible to travel to Gauteng for the presentation. To ensure the student could still participate, the organizers provided an online platform, allowing the project to be presented virtually. This accommodation underscores the commitment to inclusivity and support for students with limited resources.
The initiative highlights the importance of nurturing scientific talent in Lesotho and providing students with exposure to regional platforms where they can showcase their work. By presenting their projects alongside peers from other schools, students gain critical experience in communication, presentation skills, and networking within the scientific community.
The event also reflects ongoing efforts by the Lesotho Science and Maths Teachers Association to promote STEM education and provide practical opportunities for students to engage with science beyond the classroom. It demonstrates how collaboration with regional science bodies can expand learning opportunities for young Basotho learners.
Through such programs, students not only develop technical skills but also build confidence to participate in national and international science initiatives. The inclusion of online presentations ensures that financial barriers do not limit talent, making science accessible to all motivated students.
This achievement reinforces Lesotho’s commitment to developing the next generation of scientists and innovators, while highlighting the role of supportive structures and regional partnerships in empowering young learners.
