World Children’s Day 2025 Celebrated in Botswana

On 15 November 2025, over 200 children from nine African countries gathered in Botswana to celebrate World Children’s Day. The event focused on empowering young voices and promoting their rights under this year’s theme, “My Day My Rights: From Promises to Action.” Participants engaged in discussions, activities, and workshops aimed at translating children’s rights commitments into practical steps in their communities.
Lesotho was represented by 20 children from the Leadership Program. Their delegation actively participated in sessions, sharing experiences and ideas on improving child welfare and advocacy. The event highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration among young leaders, emphasizing how children can hold communities and governments accountable for their promises.
A symbolic baton was handed over to Lesotho, marking it as the host of the 2026 World Children’s Day. This gesture underscores a tradition of continuity and shared responsibility among participating nations. It also signals Lesotho’s commitment to advancing the rights of children and providing a platform for young voices to influence policy and community initiatives.
Organizers noted that this year’s event aimed to move beyond pledges and promises, focusing on actionable measures that ensure children’s rights are respected and implemented. Activities ranged from interactive workshops on health, education, and protection to forums where children could directly address policymakers.
The Botswana celebration also emphasized inclusivity, ensuring children from diverse backgrounds and abilities could participate fully. The event reinforced the idea that children are not only beneficiaries of rights but also active contributors to societal development.
Looking ahead, the baton handover to Lesotho sets the stage for a new wave of initiatives, with the 2026 celebration expected to build on the momentum of action-oriented advocacy. Participants left Botswana inspired to continue advocating for their rights and influencing tangible changes in their home countries.
This gathering demonstrates that with proper support and platforms, children can transform promises into action, shaping policies and communities that respect and protect their rights.
