Official Launch of the Lesotho Horticultural Incubation and Training Centre in Mahobong

The Lesotho Horticultural Incubation and Training Centre (LHITC) and its accompanying Packhouse were officially launched on 4 March 2026 in Mahobong, Leribe. The ceremony was graced by His Majesty King Letsie III, who attended in his capacity as an African Union Nutrition Champion and FAO Special Goodwill Ambassador for Nutrition. The event marked a major milestone in Lesotho’s efforts to strengthen its agricultural sector, particularly horticulture, and improve nutrition outcomes across the country. The LHITC is designed to support farmers, entrepreneurs, and young people by providing practical training, incubation facilities, and access to modern horticultural technologies. The Packhouse complements this effort by enabling efficient processing, storage, and distribution of fresh produce, ensuring higher quality and market competitiveness.
The centre aims to empower local farmers by providing comprehensive training on modern farming techniques, pest management, crop selection, and post-harvest handling. Trainees will gain hands-on experience in greenhouse management, irrigation systems, and sustainable farming practices that increase productivity while conserving resources. By combining technical knowledge with practical exposure, LHITC prepares participants to operate commercially viable horticultural businesses. The centre also focuses on value addition and quality standards, enabling farmers to meet both local and international market requirements. This integrated approach ensures that the horticultural sector contributes to food security, economic growth, and improved livelihoods in the region.
The Packhouse facility is a critical part of LHITC’s strategy to enhance the entire horticultural value chain. It provides infrastructure for sorting, grading, and packaging fresh produce, helping farmers maintain high standards from farm to market. Proper post-harvest handling reduces losses, increases shelf life, and boosts income for producers. The centre also facilitates market linkages, connecting farmers with local retailers, exporters, and institutional buyers. By integrating training, incubation, and processing under one roof, LHITC creates a model that supports entrepreneurship and strengthens the horticultural economy. The project aligns with national and regional objectives to promote sustainable agriculture and improve nutrition outcomes through increased access to fresh, quality produce.
His Majesty King Letsie III highlighted the importance of nutrition and sustainable agriculture during the launch. As a recognized advocate for nutrition and food security, he emphasized that the centre will play a pivotal role in improving dietary diversity and health outcomes in Lesotho. The LHITC also aligns with the African Union’s objectives to empower communities through nutrition-sensitive agriculture initiatives. The royal endorsement reinforces the centre’s national significance and encourages active participation from farmers, youth, and private sector stakeholders. By linking policy support with practical training and infrastructure, LHITC demonstrates a holistic approach to transforming Lesotho’s horticultural sector.
The official launch of the Lesotho Horticultural Incubation and Training Centre and Packhouse represents a landmark step in advancing agriculture, entrepreneurship, and nutrition in Lesotho. By providing training, incubation, and modern post-harvest facilities, the centre equips farmers with the skills and infrastructure needed to succeed in competitive markets. The initiative is expected to increase productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve incomes for local farmers while promoting better nutrition nationwide. With the guidance of His Majesty King Letsie III and support from national and regional partners, LHITC serves as a model for sustainable agricultural development in Lesotho. The centre’s integrated approach positions it as a transformative platform for growth, innovation, and improved food security.
