Lesotho Removed from SADC Watchlist, Marks Milestone in Political Stability

Deputy Prime Minister Justice Nthomeng Majara announced a historic achievement for Lesotho on behalf of His Majesty’s Government and Prime Minister Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane. Speaking to the nation, she confirmed that on Sunday, August 17, 2025, during a Southern African Development Community (SADC) meeting in Antananarivo, Madagascar, Lesotho was officially removed from the SADC list of countries under monitoring for political instability, insecurity, and lack of peace.

Lesotho had been under SADC scrutiny for over a decade, with previous monitoring periods in 1994, 1998, 2007, and continuously from 2014. The monitoring reflected concerns over political instability and security challenges that affected the country’s international standing. Deputy Prime Minister Majara highlighted that this recognition represents a significant turnaround for the Basotho people and the nation’s governance.

She credited Prime Minister Matekane’s leadership and the efforts of His Majesty’s Government for steering the country toward stability. Since taking office on October 28, 2022, the Prime Minister committed to restoring political dignity, improving security, and fostering peace. SADC’s decision now acknowledges progress in Lesotho’s electoral process, governance, and overall political stability.

Deputy Prime Minister Majara expressed gratitude to government ministers, legislators, political party leaders, the private sector, media, religious leaders, and all Basotho citizens who supported the journey. She announced that the cabinet has planned a grand welcome for Prime Minister Matekane upon his return on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Moshoeshoe I International Airport, with celebrations extending to his residence.

This milestone enhances Lesotho’s regional standing and positions the country for leadership roles within SADC departments. The Ministry of Home Affairs, through the Public Ceremonies Committee, will oversee the implementation of the celebrations and official protocols.

The Deputy Prime Minister concluded by urging citizens to recognize the achievement as a product of national unity, resilience, and dedicated governance. Lesotho’s removal from the SADC watchlist marks a turning point in its political history and opens new opportunities for regional engagement and leadership.
