Lesotho Launches Nationwide Nutrition Survey to Tackle Child Stunting

Lesotho faces a silent crisis affecting its youngest citizens. About 36 percent of Basotho children suffer from stunting, a condition that impairs physical growth and brain development. This challenge reflects the impact of chronic malnutrition on children’s potential and future opportunities.

In response, the Ministry of Health, with support from the World Bank, has launched a nationwide Nutrition Survey. The initiative aims to identify the root causes of stunting and develop sustainable strategies to improve child nutrition.

Minister of Health Selibe Mochoboroane described the survey as a pivotal step for Lesotho’s future. He emphasized the importance of understanding the factors behind stunting to design interventions that work effectively.

The survey will be carried out by 75 trained field workers traveling across all ten districts of Lesotho. They will collect data from households, focusing on key areas such as child nutrition, maternal health, and access to healthcare. These factors are essential for ensuring every child has a strong start in life.

The Nutrition Survey reflects a commitment to addressing one of Lesotho’s most pressing public health challenges. By generating evidence-based insights, the government aims to implement targeted programs that reduce stunting and support healthy growth for all children.

This initiative underscores the government’s strategy to prioritize child wellbeing, strengthen healthcare delivery, and create opportunities for future generations to thrive.
