Lesotho Expands Digital Horizons with Strong EU Partnership

Lesotho is taking bold steps toward becoming one of Africa’s leading digital nations. The country continues to strengthen its digital governance and infrastructure, supported by the European Union (EU) through targeted programs and expertise-sharing initiatives.

The EU’s commitment to Lesotho’s digital transformation is visible through key initiatives such as the Data Governance in Africa (Data4Gov) programme and the Technical Assistance and Information Exchange (TAIEX) mechanism. These efforts are designed to help the Kingdom establish robust data management frameworks, improve transparency, and enhance public sector efficiency.

This week marked a significant milestone in this partnership. EU Ambassador to Lesotho, Mette Sunnergren, paid a courtesy visit to Minister of Communications, Nthati Moorosi, to celebrate the successful conclusion of a comprehensive review of Lesotho’s Data Management Policy. The review, led by AUDA-NEPAD and CIPESA under the Data4Gov programme, focused on strengthening governance systems that underpin the country’s digital transformation.

The policy validation ensures that Lesotho’s progress in digital technology is supported by a foundation of trust, accountability, and equal opportunity. These principles are essential as the nation embraces digital tools in public service, education, and business.

Lesotho’s collaboration with the EU also opens the door to knowledge exchange and international benchmarking. In the coming days, the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI) will lead a TAIEX study mission to Estonia, one of the world’s most advanced digital economies. The mission aims to expose Lesotho’s officials to Estonia’s best practices in e-governance, digital identity, and cybersecurity.

This partnership signals a clear vision for Lesotho’s future. By aligning with the EU’s expertise and Africa-wide data governance frameworks, the Kingdom is positioning itself as a trusted and capable player in the continent’s digital economy.

Lesotho’s steady progress reflects a growing determination to bridge the digital divide, empower its citizens with technology, and build an inclusive, data-driven society.
