Lesotho Learners Lead Environmental Action During Commonwealth Games Baton Relay

About 150 learners from Lesia Government Primary School in Ha-Thetsane took part in a major community and environmental initiative, cleaning up a local area near a water stream that feeds into the Mohokare River. The students collected two vanloads of plastic waste, demonstrating the impact young people can have in protecting their surroundings.
The initiative combined hands-on action with learning. Through the ReNOKA board game and an interactive quiz dialogue, learners explored important environmental topics. They learned about the consequences of plastic pollution on water quality, the essential role wetlands play in sustaining water supply, and the broader importance of caring for their local environment.
The clean-up coincided with the final leg of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games King’s Baton Relay in Lesotho. Learners had the opportunity to engage directly with the Royal King’s Baton, adding excitement and a sense of global connection to their environmental activities.

Organisers praised the collaborative effort, highlighting the support of key partners including the Lesotho Commonwealth Games Association, Lesotho National Olympic Committee, the British High Commissioner to Lesotho, the European Union in Lesotho, and the Lesia Community Council. Their joint efforts ensured a successful event that combined environmental education, community action, and cultural engagement.
This initiative demonstrates that raising awareness and encouraging action among young people can foster collective responsibility. By involving learners in meaningful activities, Lesotho is equipping the next generation to protect the environment while promoting civic engagement and sustainable practices.
The event reinforces the importance of local action in addressing global environmental challenges and showcases the role schools can play in empowering youth to make tangible contributions to their communities.
