China-Lesotho Ties Strengthened During Vice Chairman Zheng Jianbang’s Visit

Yesterday, H.E. Zheng Jianbang, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China, paid a courtesy call on His Majesty King Letsie III during his official visit to Lesotho. The visit underscored the long-standing diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
Following the royal meeting, Vice Chairman Zheng held discussions with Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Sam Matekane. The talks focused on enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors, including infrastructure development, healthcare, energy, education, agriculture, and food security. Key projects highlighted include the Maseru District Hospital and Eye Clinic, the Mpiti–Sehlaba-Thebe Road, the Ramarothole Solar Energy Project, and the soon-to-be-delivered Agricultural Storage and Logistics Infrastructure facility. These projects reflect the depth and impact of China-Lesotho collaboration.
Prime Minister Matekane emphasized opportunities to expand parliamentary diplomacy. He encouraged inter-parliamentary cooperation and exchange programmes aimed at promoting good governance and bringing parliamentary institutions closer to the people.
On global matters, Lesotho praised China’s contributions to South-South cooperation and the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). The Prime Minister also reaffirmed Lesotho’s support for the One-China Policy, reinforcing it as a cornerstone of bilateral relations.
The visit highlights the continued commitment of both nations to strengthen strategic partnerships, enhance economic development, and support social welfare initiatives across Lesotho. China’s collaboration remains a key driver in advancing national development priorities.
