Lesotho Advances Postal Services Through Digital Transformation

The Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Honourable Nthati Moorosi, delivered key remarks at the 28th Universal Postal Congress held in the United Arab Emirates. She outlined Lesotho’s ongoing efforts to transform its postal services into e-services centres using advanced connectivity and ICT equipment, with a focus on digital inclusion, especially in rural communities.

Honourable Moorosi explained that postal services in Lesotho now go beyond traditional mail delivery. They support social grants and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including poverty reduction and reducing inequalities. She emphasised that digital adoption is creating new opportunities for commerce, government-to-citizen services, and community empowerment. Digital platforms will allow citizens to access services more efficiently, promote financial inclusion, and provide small businesses with avenues to participate in e-commerce.

According to the Minister, these initiatives reflect Lesotho’s determination to use innovation as a driver for national development while ensuring that technological progress benefits all citizens.

Honourable Moorosi also congratulated the re-elected Director of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), Masahiko Metoki, and the Deputy Director General, Marjan Osvald. She reaffirmed Lesotho’s commitment to advancing postal services and supporting the UPU’s role in enhancing global connectivity.

She highlighted the long history of postal services in Lesotho, which has evolved to include telecommunications and financial services through the Post Bank. The current focus is on digital transformation through e-services, aligning with the country’s National Digital Transformation Strategy.

Lesotho’s approach demonstrates a clear commitment to integrating technology into public services, promoting financial inclusion, and leveraging postal infrastructure to drive broader socio-economic development.
