Prime Minister Matekane Highlights Challenges and Opportunities in Lesotho’s Digital Transformation

Prime Minister Sam Matekane has acknowledged that Lesotho’s digital progress faces key challenges, including vandalism of network infrastructure, cybercrime threats, and digital exclusion affecting many households. He made these remarks during the closing ceremony of the Econet Expo 2025 on Friday.

Matekane emphasized the need for collective action to overcome these obstacles and ensure that digital growth in Lesotho is both inclusive and sustainable. He noted that addressing vandalism, improving cybersecurity, and expanding digital access are critical steps to unlocking the country’s full potential and creating opportunities for citizens.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling these challenges in partnership with the private sector, guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He stressed that with strong policies, strategic partnerships, and collective effort, Lesotho can position itself as a leader, rather than a follower, in the digital transformation journey.

“Let us look ahead with confidence. The fourth industrial revolution is not happening elsewhere, it is here and with the right partnerships, with the right policies and with collective will of our people, Lesotho cannot be a follower, but a leader in digital transformation journey,” Matekane said.

He further highlighted that the government aims to ensure the digital revolution benefits all Basotho, creating a future where prosperity, equality, and innovation go hand in hand. By prioritizing access, security, and infrastructure protection, Lesotho can strengthen its digital economy and empower its citizens for sustainable growth.
