Basotho Nurses Urged to Stay Dedicated Amid Ongoing Challenges

Despite persistent challenges such as staff shortages, low salaries, and limited resources, nurses across Lesotho are being called upon to remain steadfast in their service to the nation. This heartfelt appeal was made by the Secretary General of the Qiloane Nursing Assistants Association, Mr. David Mats’ela, in a message commemorating International Nurses Day.
In an interview held on Monday, Mr. Mats’ela emphasized that it is time for the government to prioritize investment in the nursing sector. He highlighted that nurses are central to promoting good health and preventing disease, noting that a well-supported nursing workforce could significantly reduce the nation’s dependence on costly treatments abroad.
“When nurses are properly equipped and motivated, they form the backbone of a resilient health system,” Mr. Mats’ela stated. “A stronger nursing workforce not only saves lives but also saves the country millions in healthcare costs.”
He acknowledged the heavy burden that nurses bear and applauded their resilience, especially in the face of difficult working conditions. However, he reminded all nurses of the oaths they took — to serve every Mosotho with dignity and fairness, regardless of the circumstances.
Mr. Mats’ela’s remarks came as the world celebrated International Nurses Day on May 12, an annual event that honors the life and legacy of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing. The day serves to recognize the dedication of nurses worldwide and the critical role they play in healthcare delivery.
This year’s theme, chosen by the International Council of Nurses, is “Our Nurses. Our Future. The Economic Power of Care.” It underscores the significant economic value of investing in the nursing profession and how such investments can drive improved health outcomes and economic resilience on a global scale.
As Lesotho joins the international community in honoring nurses, Mr. Mats’ela’s message is a powerful reminder of the need to protect and empower those on the frontlines of healthcare. For a healthier future for Basotho, he stressed, the country must take bold steps to uplift and support its nurses — the unsung heroes of the health system.
