Lihaseng Community Raises Concerns Over Wool and Mohair Centre’s Changing Purpose

The Lihaseng community has expressed growing concern over the current state and use of the Wool and Mohair Centre, a facility that was established several years ago with the goal of supporting the processing of wool and mohair. According to local villagers and leadership, the centre is no longer fulfilling its original purpose and has instead been repurposed for entertainment events.

Mr. Ralebenya Khomo-ea-Majoe, the spokesperson for the Lihaseng chief, shared the community’s dissatisfaction with the shift in the facility’s function. He explained that the centre was originally designed to support local livelihoods by providing a space for the processing of wool and mohair, a valuable industry in the region. However, recent developments have seen the centre used for entertainment events, a change that has not been communicated to or agreed upon by the community.

“We were informed when the centre was established that it would be used for wool and mohair processing,” said Mr. Khomo-ea-Majoe. “However, now that it has become an entertainment venue, we are not being consulted or updated. For the centre to operate harmoniously within our village, the community must be engaged.”

The shift in the centre’s use has raised questions among villagers, who feel that the facility no longer serves the economic interests of the community. Many residents are calling for a return to its original purpose, which they believe would provide greater benefits to the village. The lack of consultation or involvement in the decision-making process has also contributed to a sense of frustration and disillusionment among the locals.

As the community continues to voice their concerns, it remains to be seen whether the authorities will reconsider the facility’s purpose or take steps to involve the community in the decision-making process. For now, the Wool and Mohair Centre stands as a symbol of a promise that, according to Lihaseng residents, has not been fulfilled.
