IEC Chairman Emphasizes the Importance of Security in Elections

Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Chairman, Mr. Mphasa Mokhochane, has underscored the crucial role of security in ensuring credible and peaceful elections. Speaking at a seminar held in Maseru on Tuesday, he emphasized that security is an integral part of election processes and a key pillar in safeguarding democracy.

The seminar, which focused on the importance of security for the Electoral Management Body (EMB), brought together representatives from security agencies, civil society organizations, political parties, IEC Commissioners, and staff. In his address, Mr. Mokhochane highlighted the critical role stakeholders play in maintaining order and protecting the integrity of electoral administration and management.

He pointed out that securing elections goes beyond just physical safety—it includes preventing electoral fraud, protecting voting materials, ensuring the safety of candidates and voters, and maintaining trust in the democratic process. “Security is not just about keeping peace at polling stations; it is about guaranteeing free and fair elections where every citizen feels safe to exercise their right to vote,” he stated.

The discussions at the seminar also explored strategies to strengthen collaboration between the IEC and security forces to prevent election-related violence and ensure smooth electoral operations. Participants emphasized the need for clear security protocols, capacity-building initiatives, and public awareness campaigns to promote peaceful participation in elections.

As Lesotho continues to work towards improving its electoral processes, the IEC’s emphasis on security reaffirms its commitment to transparent and credible elections. The seminar served as a platform for stakeholders to share insights and develop a unified approach in safeguarding future electoral events.
