High Dependency Unit a Lifesaving Investment for Basotho

The Minister of Health, Mr. Selibe Mochoboroane, has hailed the establishment of the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at Motebang Government Hospital in Hlotse, Leribe, as a vital step toward strengthening Lesotho’s health system. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, Mr. Mochoboroane emphasized that the HDU ensures Basotho have long-term access to quality and lifesaving care.

The new HDU, supported by the United States Embassy through USAID’s Rise Project and implemented by Jhpiego, demonstrates the critical role partnerships play in improving healthcare delivery. Mr. Mochoboroane highlighted the ministry’s dedication to building a resilient healthcare system that addresses a wide spectrum of medical needs beyond the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beyond COVID-19: A System Built to Last
The Minister emphasized that while the HDU initially played a significant role in managing severe COVID-19 cases, its importance transcends the pandemic. “The High Dependency Unit will remain a cornerstone of our healthcare system, providing critical care to those most in need, particularly Priority One Patients,” he stated.

A Commitment to Resilient Healthcare
The HDU is designed to support patients requiring intensive monitoring and care, bridging the gap between standard ward care and intensive care units (ICUs). Mr. Mochoboroane described the unit as a testament to the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and ensuring sustainable health services for years to come.

“This investment reflects our collective determination to provide Basotho with the highest standards of healthcare, ensuring that no one is left behind,” he added.

Partnerships Driving Progress
The establishment of the HDU is a result of the collaboration between the Ministry of Health, the United States Embassy, and USAID’s Rise Project, implemented by Jhpiego. This partnership highlights the importance of international cooperation in enhancing the capacity of Lesotho’s health system.

The HDU at Motebang Government Hospital is expected to improve patient outcomes significantly, particularly for those requiring urgent, high-level care. This initiative underscores the government’s vision for a healthier and more resilient Lesotho, offering hope to countless patients and families across the country.
